This February during Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month, Melanie Weisbrod of Toronto reflects on sending her daughter Shoshanna on an inclusive Birthright Israel journey and witnessing her growth.
“My daughter’s first trip to Israel was her very first time ever being away from our family, essentially on her own, but travelling with a group of peers and staff who truly looked after her needs while also giving her a sense of independence.
Birthright Israel is so important. And equally important is making sure individuals with various challenges have the opportunity to be there as well, so they can see what Israel is for themselves.
Being in Israel with others her age, experiencing the country firsthand, and connecting more deeply with her Judaism and with Jewish people from around the world, especially in Israel, truly strengthened her feelings about being Jewish and deepened her sense of belonging.
We are so grateful to everyone who made this opportunity possible.”
– Melanie Weisbrod, Toronto, Canada
For Melanie, watching Shoshanna prepare for the journey was emotional. It was a chance for her daughter to step into independence, form friendships, explore Israel, and strengthen her Jewish identity in her own way.
What stood out most was the sense of belonging. Shoshanna was not an exception. She was not on the margins. She was part of a community of peers, fully included in the experience.
That sense of belonging matters.
Experiences like this extend far beyond ten days. They build confidence. They deepen identity. They open doors to connection and continued engagement in Jewish life.
Accessibility and Inclusion Birthright Israel journeys reflect a commitment that access should never be a barrier to Jewish identity or community participation.
For families like Melanie’s, this program represents possibility. The possibility of independence, growth, and pride.
Why This Impact Matters
Shoshanna’s journey is a reminder that accessibility & inclusion is not an add-on. It is a value.
When Jewish young adults are given the opportunity to experience Israel in an environment designed to support them, the impact ripples outward to families, communities, and future generations.
Birthright Israel journeys from Canada are made possible through the philanthropic leadership of the Birthright Israel Foundation of Canada, ensuring that these life-shaping experiences remain accessible to Jewish young adults across the country.
Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month reminds us that belonging matters and that every Jewish journey should be possible.
Make the Next Journey Possible.
